Brew Review: Neapolitan Stout

Growing up, one of my favorite ice cream flavors was Neapolitan. The classic trio of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry was one you could not go wrong with, especially all together in the same bowl. I always tried to get all three flavors in one bite and truly enjoy the excitement the Neapolitan flavor offered. Fast forward to last week when I saw this beer on the shelves at my local liquor store…and the memories came flooding back! Brewed by Saugatuck Brewing Company in Douglas, Michigan, Neapolitan Stout is sold in 4 packs of 12 oz bottles, coming in at 6% abv. Cue the ice cream truck music!

Appearance: The beer pours a dark brown color with a very slight head that’s almost a khaki/light tan color.

Aroma: Huge notes of milk chocolate up front, followed by smokey vanilla and coffee, with a citrus, lemony finish that most likely comes from the strawberry. neapolitan ice cream

Taste: Just like the ice cream, the flavors in this beer are all present in one glass! You immediately get the strawberry flavor, followed by a creamy vanilla that transitions into the smokey chocolate flavor which defines milk stouts. I can’t believe how all three flavors not only exist in the beer, but how you can taste all three individually throughout the sip. Really, really great flavor engineering Saugatuck! If you’re not into sweet/dessert beers I’d skip this one because it is very sweet. One or two is all I could take down at a time, but honestly with a beer like this I am not looking to pound them all in a sitting. (Or recommend it.)

Rating: 5/5 Its Neapolitan Stout, an ice cream beer, that tastes just what it says it should taste like. I love unique beers like this, and Saugatuck Brewing Co. did not disappoint. Thanks for taking me back to my childhood!

Sounds delicious. Did you find that it got kind of … old after a while or is this something easy to finish?

It was easy to finish. I only drank one though, I bet the second or third would be tough. Cheers!
